Sport Relief is a sports-focused fundraising campaign, run by Comic Relief. The charity aims to bring the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives.

With a saturated market of sports-based fundraising events, it was becoming harder for Sport Relief to stand out from other charities (only 36% of the public felt like it did). To achieve the goals of driving awareness and increasing active participation, a team of us were tasked with producing a step-counting app, centred around a national, mass participation challenge of racking up one billion steps in one day.

UX Approach

From the user research that had been gathered, we were able to determine the type of users we were targeting. They were defined by three user motivations:

Having fun with friends

Improving everyday

Raising money

● Further discovery sessions, with the project team helped develop user flows and IA, as well as establishing the required functionality.

Visual Design

I took lead from overall Sport Relief identity styleguide, focusing on a reduced gradient palette and integrating the bespoke brush type crafted for this campaign. I also introduced app-specific UI elements.

Home Screen

The collective national step counter is placed right upfront, alongside the user’s own personal step counter on the home screen. These are only visible to the user once their step tracker is connected.

The feed displays content cards signposting to features of the app. These include challenge milestones, featured content, badges, fun facts and project stories.

● The Billion Step Challenge officially started in the last week of the 6-week campaign, so a pre-challenge phase was reflected on the home screen. The target was set as the nation’s PB count. This was changed to a billion steps, once the challenge had begun.

Challenges

Users were able to join a challenge with friends and take it on as a team. Each one was based on a real-life Comic Relief celebrity challenge, where the step count had been approximated. Users could keep track of the challenge’s progress and post to a team feed.

Leagues

For users wanting something more spicy, they could join a public team within one of our leagues and compete against other teams with their combined step count. Leagues included Premier League, 6 Nations and Hogwarts Houses, as well as the option for users to create their own league.

Discover

Users could find and consume celebrity workout videos to help users increase their step counts, videos about what the money raised can do for beneficiaries, and fundraising articles.

Raise Money

Users are given options to donate to Comic Relief or set up a Comic Relief fundraising page (aka a “Giving Page”).

Results

The app received 220k downloads across 6 weeks and contributed to over £38 million that was raised by the end of the campaign.
